New waste stations - Kolding

Waste is now to be sorted in Kolding

The new waste stations at the University of Southern Denmark are coming to Kolding, where they will be delivered and set up during week 37. The new waste bins allow better sorting, less waste for incineration and thus fewer CO2 emissions.

From Wednesday 13 September, the new arrivals will make an entrance at campus Kolding. This time, it’s not students who will be moving in, but rather some brand-new waste bins. The new waste stations will be divided into five compartments and will be placed in central locations around the building. The waste stations will be burnt orange, Kolding’s signature colour, so they should be noticeable!

The five compartments will be:

  • General waste
  • Plastics, food and drink cartons
  • Food waste
  • Glass/metal
  • Paper/cardboard

Week 38 will see the end of office waste bins being emptied, so when the bag disappears from the bin, it will be for the last time. You will no longer receive bags for the bin. Instead, you will have to empty the bin yourself in the waste station in the nearest corridor. If you no longer wish to keep your bin, you can drop it off at the mailroom (Room 11.18).

Different setup than in the municipality – a little more

Waste sorting at SDU will also be different from what those who live in Kolding are used to, as Kolding Municipality does not have as many combination fractions. The reason why SDU has chosen these fractions is that the City Council in Kolding has decided to introduce the combination fractions in 2024/25, which will match those at SDU.

This is also one of the reasons why the installation has taken a little longer in Kolding than first anticipated, as SDU wanted to purchase waste stations that do not need to be replaced in a year.

It has been important to be absolutely sure what Kolding Municipality had opted for, and since SDU also shares waste facilities with UC Syd, the proposal for the future combinations had to be discussed with them. Lastly, SDU had to be sure that the waste supplier could handle the new combinations from the outset.

If you want to do better at sorting your waste than Odense does, make sure to throw your disposable coffee cup and paper bag from the canteen into the general waste fraction – because that’s where they belong! If in doubt, it is always better to throw your rubbish into general waste than to destroy a pure fraction.

Sustainable waste bins

As well as allowing for better sorting, less waste for incineration and therefore fewer CO2 emissions, the new waste system is also sustainable in its own right.

Manufactured in Denmark from 95% recycled steel, its modular design makes it easy to add or remove waste fractions if new requirements or needs aris
