Temperature restriction removed at SDU

This coming winter, temperatures will no longer be restricted to a maximum of 19 degrees at SDU’s locations – but you are still encouraged to think before turning up the thermostat.

Winter is coming’ is a well-known quote from the popular series Game of Thrones, and although temperatures are still well above freezing at the moment, the calendar is steadily moving towards the colder months.

Last year, as a result of the energy and supply situation in Europe, SDU’s Board decided to follow the recommendations of the Danish Energy Agency and the Ministry of Higher Education and Science to lower the heating of state buildings to 19 degrees Celsius where it was deemed possible and technically appropriate.

This year, the recommendation has been removed, but before you crank up the thermostat and turn up in shorts and a T-shirt, everyone is encouraged to consider the most suitable level for the working environment and for the climate before setting the workplace temperature.

The official recommendations for workspace temperatures

According to the Danish Working Environment Authority, the optimal temperature for sedentary work is just above 20 degrees, and it should not fall below 18°C. Their website states (in Danish):

- Generally, under normal climate and working conditions, the temperature should be kept between 20–22°C for sedentary work and should not exceed 25°C.
