SDU Moves event 2020

Do something good to yourself and move in the name of science

Research shows that we have become more inactive during COVID-19. We sit more and are much less active than normal. The event ‘SDU Moves’ brings activity in everyday life into focus when employees at SDU are encouraged to spend a couple of their working hours in the name of health and well-being and count active minutes with their colleagues.

Your registration will be added to the total number of registered minutes for the first ‘SDU Moves’ event.

About the project:

At the Executive Board meeting on August 27th, 2020, the Board accepted to go ahead with the SDG-challenge ‘SDU Moves’

The project began at the SDU Development Goals Kick-off in September 2019 – and the best place to start is of cause with the people who participated in the brainstorming about better health and well-being at SDU through physical activity during the day of work and study.
The kick-off event ‘SDU Moves’ on October 9th 2020 is part of this project.

Project goals:
’SDU Moves’ is a Citizen Science-project that seeks to contribute to the integration of a healthy culture in the everyday lives of staff and students. A change in behaviour is to contribute to better health and well-being at SDU. Therefore, the project is organized as a Citizen Science project where staff and students are involved and engaged in the development, execution and implementation of the project in every campus city.

Relationship to the Sustainable Development Goals:
The project aims at the SDG Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being with the objectives to:

1/ increase the awareness of the importance and effects of physical activity during the day of work/ study

2/ generate a culture in the work and study day where there is room for movement.

Through a new awareness amongst managers, staff and students the public health and well-being will have an opportunity to improve. The project is related to relevant research areas at SDU and based on tangible scientific knowledge.

The overall SDG indicators of the project:

  • 3.4 By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being.
  • 3.4.1 Mortality rate attributed to cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes or chronic respiratory disease

The project also based on the WHO’s ’Global action plan on physical activity 2018–2030: more active people for a healthier world’ (https://www.who.int/ncds/prevention/physical-activity/global-action-plan-2018-2030/en/).

Themes:
The challenge will focus on movement on many levels (from tiny movements to sport/exercise and preventive training) in order to engage as many as possible amongst the staff and students:

  • The tiny movement (such as walking over to your colleague’s desk instead of emailing/phoning, stand up meetings/standing coffee breaks, standing up while working etc.)
  • Exercise to prevent injuries (typically in the shoulders, neck and lower back)
  • Sport at work (Time spend on exercising is part of the working hours)
  • Mindfulness/Meditation
  • Behavioural/ Cultural change (Permission, possibility, expectation) is integrated into every theme.

Several units and departments at SDU are already working with these elements. Therefore, we would like to get a dialogue going to gather knowledge – and get ideas, that are perceived as operational and relevant for employees and students.

The project is based on the Citizen Science principles of co-creation, knowledge sharing and joint production of data.
