The 4 dimensions of the competence wheel

Application - Understanding technology - Dissemination and communication - Development and implementation

The dimension
Application

Competence in applications is a general competence that is relevant for everyone. The systems and data used by different disciplines vary greatly, but what they all have in common is that everyone must have good application skills within their field of work.

Application has three sub-areas:

  • User Competences

Is about having competences to be able to use the digital solutions, systems, programmes and tools necessary for your work.

  • Data application

Is about having competences to have an overview of data: Where data you create is included; What good data is; How to create good data.

  • Data and information security

Is about having competences to handle data in a good and responsible way.

The dimension
Understanding technology

Technology works best when you understand what happens in the interaction between technology, professionalism, core tasks, processes and the people who use or are affected by the technology. This understanding is important when assessing where and when and in relation to whom technologies make sense - and when they don't. Technology literacy is also important for understanding the challenges technology creates and helping to solve them, as well as recognising the opportunities technology offers to solve tasks in new ways.

Understanding technology has three sub-areas:

  • Technology, professionalism and people

Is about having competences to assess digitalisation in relation to professionalism and the people who encounter your professionalism.

  • Technology assessment

Is about having competences to assess the process of the task and from this which technologies could be relevant.

  • Legal security and ethics

Is about having competences to recognise the legal and ethical perspectives of what technologies bring.

The dimension
Dissemination and communication

Communication is increasingly taking place via digital platforms. At the same time, much communication comes from employees who are not specialised in communication. Therefore, competences around digital communication and dissemination are necessary to focus on.

The dissemination and communication dimension is fundamentally about being able to communicate digitalisation and technological opportunities to others. It's about being able to communicate how to use digital solutions, being able to use digital communication and being able to assess the different possibilities for ordinary communication using digital solutions.

Dissemination and communication has three sub-areas:

  • Digital communication 1:many

Is about having competences to communicate to many users - e.g. via websites, LinkedIn, X.

  • Digital communication 1:1

Is about having competences to communicate one-to-one via various digital channels - e.g. emails, chat, Teams.

  • Dissemination to colleagues and other users

Is about having competences to disseminate digitalisation - what it is and how it can be used.

The dimension
Development and implementation

Most people are regularly involved in the implementation of digital solutions and technologies. Everyone has a stake in helping to drive the change that the development and implementation of new technology brings. Early and ongoing involvement of colleagues and other stakeholders in development, planning and implementation is often important for the quality, acceptance and effectiveness of solutions. Some participate and contribute with their professional knowledge and insights. Others are more specifically involved in the management of development and implementation.

Development and implementation has three sub-areas:

  • Implementation and procurement

Is about having knowledge of the methods used in procurement and implementation processes to be able to meaningfully engage in them and contribute with professionalism and experience.

  • Development

Is about having competences to have an active and guiding role in development and implementation processes.

  • Innovation

Is about having competences to contribute and drive the change brought about by the development and implementation of digital solutions.
