Exam appeals

Exam appeals are processed by the Faculty. Exam appeals are complaints relating to the conduct of the exam and the assessment.

Examination appeals are processed by the Faculty in accordance with the rules in the Examination Order.

Procedure for processing exam appeals

When students make a complaint about an exam, we follow the following procedure: The Faculty asks examiners for a statement. The student is then given the opportunity to respond. On the basis of these consultations, the Faculty will make a decision.

In some cases, it may be appropriate to clarify the case further, in which case the Faculty will ask the examiners and the student for a second response.

Complaints are a student’s legal right

A student’s complaint is a legal right for the student and should not be seen as a personal criticism of the examiners.

If a student’s complaint is upheld, it is therefore not necessarily the Faculty’s criticism of the examiners – it is usually an expression of the fact that there remains a lack of clarity regarding justification for the examiners’ assessment, which the Faculty is unable to clarify, as the exam assignment is not part of the basis for the decision. The Faculty therefore asks academic representatives to re-assess the assignment.

The regulatory framework for processing complaints

The Examination Order allows students to appeal in writing about legal and academic matters. The deadline for appeals is set at 2 weeks after notification of the assessment.

Complaints concerning academic matters are dealt with on the basis of §37 of the Examination Order.

If there have been errors or omissions in an exam, these will be dealt with according to §30 in the Examination Order and are thus not an actual exam appeal.
