Overview of funds

Find different opportunities for funding in a large and varied funding landscape.

Private national funds

In recent years, private Danish foundations have become increasingly important.

In addition to public research funding, almost equally large amounts are being distributed annually to research from private foundations.

You can find a list of the most important private foundations for SDU here.

Public national funds

The largest source at SDU is still the national public funds.

These includes the Innovation Fund, the Danish National Research Foundation, and the Independent Research Fund Denmark.

European funds

Horizon Europe has a broad range of focus areas, divided across three pillars:

Excellent Science, Global Challenges & European Industrial Competitiveness, and Innovative Europe. Each pillar has a specific set of grants and tenders connected to it. You can participate in Horizon Europe projects as a coordinator or as a partner.

See an overview of EU grants here

This guide provides an overview of each pillar:

The Excellent Science pillar consists of three main calls:

  • European Research Council (ERC)
  • Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA)
  • Research Infrastructure (RI)

Pilar II includes six clusters each with their own area of intervention and specific funding calls, plus the nonnuclear direct actions of the Joint Research Centre.

  1. Health.
  2. Culture, Creativity, and Inclusive Society.
  3. Civil Security for society.
  4. Digital, Industry and Space.
  5. Climate, Energy and Mobility.
  6. Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment.
  7. Joint Research Centre: Supporting policymakers, both European and national, with independent scientific evidence and support.

The Innovative Europe area consists of three different entities:

  • European Innovation Council (EIC)
  • European Innovation Ecosystems
  • European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT)

International funding

One of the smaller but important funding opportunities for SDU are the American foundations.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) is the US federal fund from which SDU receives most funding.

NIH is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, and it is the primary federal grant provider for health science research in the USA.

Innovation funds for commercialisation

Some funds allow young researchers to explore research ideas that have commercial potential. This is especially valuable for researchers who want to start a business or create a product or service based on their research.
