Q&A: Staircase at Stenten in the SUND building

Do you also find the staircase at Stenten in the SUND building rather narrow? In this week's Q&A, you'll discover why it was designed that way.

Question for the Q&A

I often walk from Stenten into the SUND building and wonder why the staircase leading to the second floor is so narrow. I think it looks a bit odd, and it's actually difficult for two people to pass each other on the stairs. At first glance, it seems there is enough space for the staircase to have been wider.

Dear colleague,

Thank you for your enquiry. We have forwarded your concerns to Technical Services. They explain that the design choices were made more than ten years ago.

Firstly, the design aimed to maintain the widest possible clearance on Stenten, allowing a clear view of the entrance at Stenten South and, in the future, the large art lamp that will be positioned above the wide staircase.

Secondly, the narrow staircase on Stenten was constructed merely as an alternative route to facilitate easier access to and from the Faculty Secretariat on the second floor.

The main staircase to the second floor is the one located by the elevator at Skoven, which extends from the ground floor up.
