Meet your colleague
Meet your colleague: Bo Mussmann
Meet Bo Mussmann – Head of Research and Associate Professor at UNIFY – Radiological Research and Innovation Unit, Department of Clinical Research
Can you explain what your work involves?
As the head of research at 'UNIFY – Radiological Research and Innovation Unit,' my role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities. Key among them is ensuring that our research unit remains focused on conducting high-quality research that directly benefits patients.
I also strive to create and sustain an environment that is conducive to radiological research, making our unit an attractive place for both researchers and students. A major priority for me is to provide numerous opportunities for personal development and career advancement for our researchers.
Furthermore, because radiology is integrated into the research of many clinical departments, I frequently coordinate with these departments and aim to be regarded as a valuable collaborator.
How long have you been working at SDU? Have you been here "off and on"?
I have been part of the research unit since its early days in 2011, when I was hired as a research radiographer. This early involvement allowed me to help lay the foundation for the unit. Over the years, I have significantly contributed to its ongoing development, working alongside my predecessors in the head of research role.
What is the very best part about your job?
Witnessing the growth and development of others.
Could you share a work task you've completed that you're particularly proud of?
A few years ago, I played a key role in establishing our radiological intervention clinic, commonly known as the 'obs room'. Previously, when a patient needed a kidney biopsy, for instance, they would wait in the ward until we were ready to perform the procedure and then return to the ward afterwards.
Now, we manage the entire process for the day. Patients arrive at our clinic, are prepared and treated here, and we observe them post-procedure to determine when it is safe to send them home. This approach ensures that patients primarily interact with staff who are directly involved in their care. It’s a fantastic setup.
What is your educational background – how did you end up in this job?
I am a trained radiographer with clinical experience in general X-rays, CT scanning, and interventions in both Denmark and Norway. Later, I transitioned to teaching and earned a master’s degree.
During a train journey, I met the chief radiographer, who was considering creating a position for a research radiographer. She asked for my input on what such a role should involve, and after several meetings, I ended up applying for the position I had helped design.
Since then, I have completed a PhD, undertaken postdoctoral research, and become an associate professor.
What other career paths have you considered?
Barista!
I was in Tromsø when the first coffee bars started to open. One of my colleagues was married to the owner of an amazing coffee bar, so I spent my spare time working there as an unpaid barista. It was likely a bit romanticized, as I only had to focus on making coffee without the concerns of supplies, rent, and other logistics. But the aroma of freshly roasted coffee every day was unforgettable...
What do you do in your spare time?
I love gardening; it's a wonderful way to unwind and watch things grow, which seems to be a recurring theme in my life. Music also plays a significant role for me, and there’s almost always a vinyl record spinning at my place.
Have you seen/read/listened to anything good recently that you would recommend?
The podcast 'Portrætalbum' on Radio4 features various celebrities discussing their favourite albums while sharing insights into their lives and thoughts. Recently, I listened to Christian Tafdrup talk about The Cure’s legendary and very dark album 'Pornography'. His reflections closely mirrored my own teenage experience with the album, right down to the specific lyrics he highlighted.
What is your favorite place to visit or travel to?
Cafebiografen. My urban perspective on a question that might be more suited to outdoor experiences. I have always felt comfortable at the café. A diverse mix of people visit, and I really enjoy the films they have on display.
Do you have any special talents that others might not know about?
I’m quite skilled with an espresso machine. In the summer, my version of iced mocha (choco-iced coffee) is very popular with family and friends.
