New Year’s Reception

Stress, working from home and connections with industries were themes at the New Year’s Reception

The reception also had a local folk band playing live music, snacks and champagne.

There are many things about the Faculty of Science that Rector of SDU Jens Ringsmose is impressed with, he said in his speech at the New Year’s Reception that was held on Tuesday.

The improved APV and the faculty’s ability to bring home external funding were some of the examples he mentioned.

- What I am not so impressed with is your influence on my children. I have a son and two daughters, and I thought they would find a nice home at Faculty of Social Science. Well, they are going somewhere else. My 19-year-old son has recently visited SDU concluding that he would like to study chemistry. My 17-year-old daughter want to study biology or chemistry, Jens Ringsmose said.

- So now I have my 14-year-old daughter left – and keep your hands away from her, he said, gaining laughs from the audience.

Combined physical and online work

Marianne Holmer, Dean, Faculty of Science, also praised the APV and the success with external funding in her speech.

She also shed light on some of the strategic focus areas of 2022, where a new focus area is reducing stress among staff and students. And then she emphasized how 2021 and the corona virus has made it possible to work in new ways:

 - As a result of our experience with online work during the lockdown, we are going to have a new focus area this year, where we are going to discuss what the workplace can look like in the future with combined physical and online work, Marianne Holmer said.

Working closer with industries

For the educational strategy, one focus area of Faculty of Science is reducing graduate unemployment by creating closer ties to stakeholders during the education:

- We would like to get closer to those who employ our graduates like industries, the public sector, NGO’s and so on. We are planning to have an advisory seminar, and we would like to discuss how this can be done with you, because many of you have knowledge on this, Marianne Holmer said.

In between the speeches, the local Odense-band Strawberry Blonde played live music, and the reception ended with fruit snacks, cake and champagne.
