Decrease in the number of quota 2 applicants compared to last year

1019 people have applied for admission to a Science programme at SDU, of which 248 have a Science programme at SDU as their priority. Compared to 2021, it is a decrease of 13 percent (all priorities) and 14 percent (1st priority), respectively

At national level, the number of applications for Science programmes has fallen by 15 percent (1st priorities).

The declining trend is also seen for applications to SDU as a whole. A total of 12,631 people have applied for admission with all priorities, which corresponds to a decrease of 10,6 percent and a 14 percent decrease in 1st priorities compared to last year.

The bright spots of the the Science programmes are Physics and Chemistry, which are the only programmes to have an increase in 1st priority applications of 55 percent and 33 percent, respectively, compared to 2021. However, this is based on relatively small figures.

It is sad that we are seeing this decline for so many of our programme this year," says Vice Dean for Education, Poul Nielsen.

But when we have a closer look at the numbers, it does not look that bad at all. We must remember that the decline is seen against a large increase in quota 2 applications in 2020 and 2021, when we had double-digit increases, says Poul Nielsen and elaborates:

The influx of applicants in 2020 and 2021 was probably positively affected by the corona pandemic - therefore it is relevant to compare this year's influx of applicants with 2019. Compared to 2019, we experience an increase of 10.7 percent in 1st priority applications. At the national level, the bachelor's programmes in natural sciences have experiences a 4-percent increase in the same period of time. Seen in that light, this year's number of applicants in quota 2 is quite positive.

– Moreover, admission through quota 2 is only a small part of our total admissions, and it is not a given that the number of applicants in quota 1 this summer will follow the trend from quota 2, concludes Poul Nielsen.
