Parents who have triplets or more children at the same birth are entitled to 26 extra weeks of leave of absence with maternity pay. The parents are free to divide the extra leave among themselves. The leave should be taken within 18 months after the birth.

26 Weeks of Extra Leave with Parental Leave Benefits

As parents of two or more children, born at the same birth (multiple birth parents), you are entitled to 26 weeks of extra leave with parental leave benefits, distributed with 13 weeks to each parent. You cannot transfer the extra leave to the other parent, but there is an option to transfer the leave to a social parent (for example, a spouse or partner who is not the child's biological parent).

The extra 26 weeks must be taken before the children turn 1 year old. The weeks cannot be extended or postponed. This applies regardless of any obstacles to parental leave, including if one of the children, for instance, is hospitalized. The rules apply to children born on or after May 1, 2024.

Salary Rights for Multiple Birth Parents

As an employee at SDU, you are covered by the state parental leave agreement, which means you are entitled to salary during the 13 weeks of extra leave as a multiple birth parent. The salary right applies to parents of twins born on May 1, 2024, or later. The same applies to parents of three or more children born on April 1, 2024, or later.

In addition to the above, the general rules for mother and father/co-mother apply.
