Commercialise your Innovative Idea

Commercialising innovative ideas is crucial for researchers to make a societal impact. Our dedicated team is here to help ensuring accessibility and scalability of transformative technologies. Together, we bridge academia and industry, fostering progress and enhancing lives. Let us support you in your commercialisation journey.

Report your invention or innovative idea

It’s important that you report your invention before disclosing it by means of publications, conferences, press releases, abstracts and other forms of communication. There is less potential for IPR protection for inventions that are known in the public domain.

If you have a date for any disclosure of your invention or disclosure of another invention that describes your invention, it is important that you mention this in the report.

You should report your research by means of a form that contains a confidential description of your research or invention. Your report will be registered and filed with the business development advisers at SDU RIO.

Complete the form below to disclose your innovative idea

You should email the completed report form to inventions@sdu.dk.

Business developers at SDU can advise and guide you in the process of protection your invention.

Based on your information, we assess the invention and analyze the patent landscape, market and existing technologies. We talk to you about your research plans and your own view of the potential and how you want to be involved in any commercialization process. All to determine the commercial potential.

Within two months of receiving your report, SDU - based on an assessment by the business developers at SDU RIO - must decide whether they wish to take over the rights to the invention and begin a commercialization process.

We have no desire to waste your time. If we consider that your research does not have commercial potential, it does not make sense to continue the commercialization process.

When you are employed at a public research institution, you have a duty to report any invention, that you have made in connection with your work.

You have a duty to mention everyone in the report - even when they are not employed at SDU or within RSD. SDU RIO clarifies the rights of persons or departments.

SDU RIOs business development advisers collaborate with colleagues from Denmark and the rest of the world, and are experienced with both clarifying rights and commercializing jointly owned research.

If we succeed in finding a partner to complete the development work and market your invention, we will negotiate a licence agreement with that partner. The licence will, in return for payments to SDU, give the partner a right to develop and sell products or services based on your invention, for the benefit of the public. SDU’s income is divided between SDU, the relevant department(s) and the researcher(s) behind the invention.
