A lot of excellent teaching that activates, enriches, challenges and transforms the students takes place at the universities and other educational institutions across the country. The Ministry of Higher Education and Science puts a special focus on good teaching when awarding its annual Teaching Prize.

SDU has nominated two of its many talented lecturers after a process that involved both students, colleagues, management and the SDU Centre for Teaching and Learning, namely Assistant Professor Katja Schrøder and Associate Professor Ole Graumann, who both spend their days at the Faculty of Health Sciences – Ole Graumann at the Department of Clinical Research and Katja Schrøder at the Department of Public Health.

Teaching in a new framework

For both lecturers, their ability to think outside the box and organise the teaching a little differently than usual is emphasised.

Some of the words used in the nomination of Assistant Professor Katja Schrøder are these:

‘The students highlight her ability to inspire while setting clear and distinct goals. She incorporates the students’ experiences in the teaching and brings them into play with her own professionalism by using their practice examples to promote the theoretical understanding. Katja Schrøder shows great respect for the students and the competencies they bring. The students highlight her ability to use their practice examples and combine them with priming the students to be critically reflective’.

The following words are used in the nomination of Associate Professor Ole Graumann:

‘The role that Ole Graumann takes on in the classroom is more the role as a facilitator than a communicator. Through his way of organising the teaching, the students work with the material, and through the application of different teaching methods, the students get continuous feedback on their academic development. He regularly uses, for example, quizzes and opinion polls and adapts his teaching according to the challenges the students are facing to ensure that they achieve the academic goals. The students describe how they experience moving forward academically during a teaching session and highlight how Ole Graumann is “committed and genuinely interested in both the students and what he teaches us”’.
