Obituary for John Erik Hansen

It is with great sadness that we have received the news that our colleague John Erik Hansen passed away on 19 October 2025.

John joined Odense University College of Engineering in 1987 and has since been a committed lecturer and driving force in the development of electrical engineering programmes, especially in the field of strong current. He played a central role in the establishment of the Southern Danish Model for Engineering Programmes (DSMI), which has helped shape project-oriented and problem-based teaching at SDU.

One of John's most significant contributions was the development of the Technical Diploma in Power Engineering, and specifically the course Future Electricity Supply in Denmark (FED), where he communicated his great professional insight and visions for the energy sector. In 2009, he was named lecturer of the year based on student nominations - recognising his commitment and ability to communicate complex topics with clarity and enthusiasm.

John leaves a strong academic imprint on the engineering programmes at SDU, where his work with thematic semesters and learning-supporting forms of evaluation has inspired many colleagues. For a long period, he was chair of the study board and contributed with a great sense of responsibility and care for both students and lecturers.

He will be remembered as a helpful and committed colleague who, with his calmness and humour, created a sense of security and well-being around him.

Our thoughts are with John's family.
Honouring John Erik Hansen's memory.
