Good Data Practices for Students

n the new year, the library is launching a series of courses on good data practices, helping students manage their data securely and in a structured way in their study projects (it is also for staff).

In the new year, the library will hold a series of workshops on "Good Data Practices" (datamanagement). The workshops are aimed at both students and staff.

Collecting data for a thesis and larger university assignments can seem overwhelming and difficult to structure and organize for many students. Not to mention ensuring proper and legal data storage. A new course offering from the library can help with this.

“In the introductions to good data practices, students learn to work systematically and consciously with their data. They gain insight into current regulations regarding GDPR, including consent forms, anonymization, and pseudonymization, and they become familiar with copyright rules while learning about secure data storage", says Tobias Rask Albrecht, Information Specialist, Department of Teaching and Outreach.

The course is primarily aimed at students in the Humanities and Social Sciences, but students from other disciplines are also welcome. The teaching is complemented by an online guide, which serves as the digital hub for the University Library of Southern Denmark’s new DataLab. The DataLab is designed to help students, researchers, and instructors use digital methods and tools for projects, teaching, and research.

The guide is continuously being developed, and you are encouraged to provide feedback if you or your students would like an introduction to a specific tool or simply have questions about working with data. Tobias explains that the idea for the DataLab arose as a follow-up to the courses the library already offers in NVivo.

“At the NVivo courses, we encountered students’ requests for courses on data practices, especially from those about to start their thesis. That’s why we developed this course, so students can establish an effective strategy from the start, making it easier to manage, process, and communicate their data", says Tobias Rask Albrecht.

“Our teaching practices are always evolving. The library’s many instructors teach more than 500 sessions each year, so it is only natural that we keep up with the needs of students and the university, adjusting existing courses and creating new ones when necessary", says Jens Dam, Head of Education - Department of Teaching and Outreach

SDUB DataLab was developed with inspiration from and in collaboration with AU Library.

SDUB DataLab offers courses and workshops in various tools for data collection and data analysis:

  • Speech-to-Text about the Transcriber app, which is used to transcribe audio and video files on a secure platform.
  • In NVivo courses you will be given an introduction to the basic functions of NVivo, which can be used for qualitative analysis.
  • Good Data Practices for those starting to collect data for a larger assignment or project.
  • Find Research Data is a workshop on locating existing datasets.
  • DataLab - open workshop is open guidance sessions held approximately every other week, where you can bring questions or problems, and we will try to help you move forward.

Efforts are underway to offer courses in Kolding, Esbjerg, and Sønderbrog during the spring.

All courses are held under the auspices of SDUB DataLab.
