Guidelines for employment of part-time lecturers

The qualification requirement for a part-time lecturer is a completed master's degree. In addition, employment as  a part-time lecturer requirers either:

  • Relevant practical experience at a high level, which has not been obtained through academic employment at a university

or

  • A main academic position at another university

A part-time lecturer can be employed permanently or for a limited time.

The law on temporary employment applies when hiring a part-time lecturer. The position of part-time lecturer can be filled with or without a job advertisement.

When hiring without a job advertisement a part-time lecturer can be employed for max one year and can have one extension for up to one year.

When hiring with a job advertisement a part-time lecturer can be employed for max three years and can have two extensions for up to three years at a time.

Permanent employment avoids the need for extensions. For the permanent employment of a part-time lecturer, written approval is obtained from the dean, which is sent to SDU HR together with the request for employment. In addition, permanent employment requires that the job has been advertised, unless the person who is permanently employed is already employed via an advertisement.

Request for employment without a job advertisement must go through SDUjob. For each candidate, the following is to be uploaded:

  • CV
  • Proof of acquired master's degree
  • Academic assessment (form) - must be carried out by someone at associate professor level or higher, The academic assessment must be signed, and it must be made clear who prepared it.
  • Statement of hours  (can be forwarded to DVIP@sdu.dk, if the number of hours has not yet been seetled). For HUM and SAMF hours are entered by the unit in SDUemploy and subsequently sent to DVIP@sdu.dk for signature.

When part-time lecturer contracts are extended, an email is sent to DVIP@sdu.dk with the following information:

  • candidate's full name
  • civil registration number
  • exact period of extension
  • manager approval

If there are changed terms in relation to the employment contract that is being extended, e.g. based on financial details, please specify this in the email with the request for extension.

If re-employment is requested less than 12 month after the end of the most recent employment period as a part-time lecturer at SDU, it is considered an extension of the most recent employment period.

Hours are paid according to how the period of the statement of hours is described.

That is, if it is stated, for example, 'autumn/spring semester 202x', the hours will be paid at 1/5 over the entire semester (autumn semester: September-January; and spring semester: February-June), or the part of the semester in which the part-time lecturer is employed.

If the hours take place in portions of the semester, it must be specified in the timetable for which months the hours are to be paid, e.g. 'September-November'.

Form for statement of hours

Part-time lecturers may carry out max. 500 working hours per academic year (1 September-31 August). The hours limit also applies in the case of several simultaneous appointments as a part-time lecturer at SDU. If the part-time lecturer is employed at several departments, it is important that the departments co-ordinate the hours consumption so that the hours limit is not exceeded.

If it is necessary for the organisation or implementation of the teaching, the part-time lecturer can be employed for up to 780 working hours per year.

Salary cannot be paid for more than a total of 780 working hours per year at SDU.

The conditions of employment cease without special notice at the end of the period stated in the letter of employment.

Notice of resignation by the the part-time lecturer must be given one month before the first of a month.

The part-time lecturer must send a written resignation to the employing unit and SDU HR.
