Emergency response and fire considerations

Get an overview of how we work together to prevent accidents and create a safe working and study environment at SDU.

SDU is home to many buildings, activities and people, which is why it is crucial that we all contribute to a safe everyday life. Technical Services is responsible for a wide range of tasks within emergency preparedness, fire safety and prevention, and here we have gathered the most important guidelines, advice and practical information.

Fire considerations are an important part of safety at SDU. Here you can learn how to prevent fire through the correct use of materials, equipment and setup - in everyday life and on special occasions.

  • To minimise fire risk and ensure clear escape routes, the following guidelines apply to Christmas trees and decorations.

    Setting up Christmas trees

    You are not allowed to set up Christmas trees in departments or faculties.

    You can set up Christmas trees in the following locations:
    • Campus Odense
      One Christmas tree can be placed on Campus Square. The tree must be made of fire retardant material and have LED lights
    • Campus Kolding, Esbjerg and Sønderborg:
      As a rule, Christmas trees cannot be placed indoors due to the fire strategy and the design of fire detection with line systems and flame detectors. However, it is acceptable to place one Christmas tree made of fire-retardant material and with LED lights in the lobby
    • Campus Slagelse and Copenhagen
      One Christmas tree can be placed in the entrance. The tree must be made of fire retardant material and have LED lights.
    Fire retardant material must comply with EN 1021:1 and EN 1021:2 or equivalent.

    Christmas trees can only be set up by Technical Services.

    Setting up Christmas decorations

    Christmas decorations are of course allowed. However, please note that you must not block, damage or disable active and passive fire protection systems such as sprinklers, fire doors or fire alarms when putting up Christmas decorations, as this can compromise fire safety.

     

  • All use of candlelight is prohibited.
  • All use of kitchen equipment such as coffee machines, kettles, microwaves, refrigerators and similar is prohibited in rooms and offices.

 

Technical Services manages the implementation and servicing of fire extinguishers and fire alarms, comprising:

  • CO2 extinguishers
  • Lithium battery extinguishers
  • Fire blankets
  • Fire hoses and fire cabinets
  • Fire alarm control panels
  • Fire sprinkler systems
  • Fire alarms and smoke detectors
  • Fire alarm call points
  • Inergen 'fire eater' systems
  • Ansul fire suppression systems in the canteen

Fire extinguishing equipment is ordered via 8888@sdu.dk,but Technical Services will assess whether it is necessary.

Emergency response

SDU has a collective procedure for emergencies. The aim of the collective emergency response plan is to provide a sense of security for the University's staff, students and visitors.
A number of topics have been put together in the collective emergency plan, which allows employees to find more detailed information and guidance about different emergency situations
