At SDU, salaries are negotiated for all staff (both Danish and foreign) once a year and when new appointments are made. In most cases, the negotiations are handled by the employee’s union representative, but in some staff groups the individual employee is responsible for the negotiation.

Before the annual salary negotiations, staff who are organised in unions are usually informed by their union representative when it is time to submit requests for salary changes. The representative will also often send the form that has to be filled in.

Employees who are not organised in trade unions are also entitled to salary negotiations, and their salaries will be negotiated at the same meetings and by the relevant union representative. Employees who are not organised in trade unions must keep informed and submit requests for salary changes on the same form within the relevant deadline. These requests should be submitted to the union representative or directly to the personnel office.

It is possible to apply for qualification allowances, allowances for special duties and one-off remunerations. If there is a wage policy for an individual employee group, this can be used to find examples of criteria for awarding allowances. Not all staff groups at SDU have wage policies yet – only the staff groups that have taken the initiative to have them prepared.

A salary negotiation usually take place as follows:

 - The employee submits the form with the salary request to their negotiating party.

 - Then the B side’s negotiating partner (employee) negotiates with the A side (employer) n

  The following people are usually present at the negotiations:

- One or more representatives from the management

- The employee’s union representative (and their substitute, if appropriate)

- A member of staff from the personnel office

In other words, the employee is not directly involved in the salary negotiation, as this is carried out by the representative.

Negotiation meetings take place in rounds. Salaries for academic staff, technical and administrative staff with university degrees, professors and managers are negotiated in the first quarter of each year; salaries for laboratory technicians, members of the Union of Commercial and Clerical Employees and members of the Union of Communication and Language Professionals in the second quarter; and all other staff groups in the fourth quarter.

After each round of negotiations, the personnel office informs the employee of the results of the negotiation by letter.

At SDU the Central Collaboration Committee has adopted the following deadlines:

-  April 1st: submission of forms for laboratory technicians and administrative staff in the Union of Commercial and Clerical Employees and staff in the Union of Communication and Language Professionals

-  October 1st: submissions for all other staff groups (e.g. journalists, Danish Metal, 3F, PROSA and others)

-  Febuary 1st: submissions for academic staff/managers

Some employees have bargaining rights. This means they should contact their manager with a request for salary negotiations, which take place without the participation of the union representative. It is possible to ask the union representative to conduct the negotiation. This applies to professors, executives, managers, specialist consultants and chief consultants.
