A difficult situation

Unfortunately we have to make use of unsolicited redundancies corresponding to DKK 3.2 million

By Marianne Holmer, , 4/27/2023

Dear staff

We are in a difficult situation. Parts of our world are experiencing booming growth – including research. Other parts suffer from declining youth cohorts. Add rising costs to the mix.

On the one hand, there is a great demand for experts and research to solve the complex challenges we face as society. On the other hand, it costs to educate these specialists, and currently there is an increasing focus in society on getting young people to choose vocational training and welfare subjects at the expense of academia.

Therefore, education income is decreasing at virtually all universities in Denmark. Also at SDU.

This week, the result of the prevention phase was finally calculated. Fortunately, there have been many proposals to balance the budgets. But not quite enough. Therefore, unfortunately, we will have to make unsolicited redundancies in our faculty corresponding to DKK 3.2 million.

It is not nice to have to say goodbye to colleagues. We have good colleagues at the Faculty of Science and work closely together in teams, research groups and sections.

It is difficult to wait in uncertainty until May 3, which is why it is also particularly important that we respect each other in our various positions and functions. That we show consideration.

The next question is: "What will the situation mean for the work tasks at the faculty?"

Everyone is taking on more and more in our organization, but we can't continue picking up the pace forever. In some places there will be a need to reduce service. Elsewhere, work processes must be changed to be more efficient.

It takes time to make changes and it takes time to get used to new conditions. Therefore, it will be appreciated if everyone think along the lines of optimizing and improving the use of the resources we have.

When the world around us changes, it is important that we follow along and are prepared to change.
