Financial adjustments 2023

The adjustment process is now complete and the faculty has taken the necessary steps to balance the budgets

By Marianne Holmer, , 6/8/2023

Dear staff

SDU has now come through the controlled adjustment of the economy, and information about the economic situation can be read on the Budget 2023 pages here on SDUnet. Here there is, among other things, a detailed review of the savings in the Central Administration, which has been requested by the Faculty of  Science. Task slippage has been stated as a potential challenge when cutting tasks and staff, but it is now possible to read about the consequences in the available material.

Many of you have asked about the closure of strategic efforts such as DIAS and SCC, but SDU's board maintains a continuation, as strategic efforts are important for the continued development of the university. We can now provide more detailed information about the adjustments at the faculty and the consequences thereof.

The Faculty of Science is in a situation where we can compensate for the decline in educational income by applying for more external funding. We are thus already in the process of the transformation that must take place for the whole of SDU, from being dominated by educational income to increasing income via external projects in the future.

The departments have made ambitious but realistic plans to take home more funds and we have already been able to increase this revenue stream. Therefore, we expect to meet the budgets and thus achieve balance at all departments as planned in 2027.

As far as possible, we will try to finance the additional need for administrative support by covering it via external funds, where the introduction of project supplements for private foundations is expected to be able to contribute to this.

However, the framework for the universities can still change. We are awaiting a clarification regarding upcoming reforms of the universities, which are being negotiated these days. There has been no shortage of outcry against the government's plans from virtually all stakeholders.

We must hope that the politicians come to their senses and make a sensible reform that can ensure a well-educated youth in the future. This is sorely needed with all the challenges we face as a society.
