While the country's other universities are experiencing a minor drop in admissions to their science programmes, the Faculty of Science at SDU can look forward to good progress despite some programmes with a noticeable drop in the number of admitted students.

– We are, after all, in a time where the youth cohorts are clearly decreasing towards 2034, and the government is currently directing the young people's attention towards other, non-academic education programmes. Therefore, I believe that we can be very happy that this year there are slightly more young people who choose a science programme with us, says Vice-Dean for Education Poul Nielsen

Pharmacy can be highlighted for its progress this year, when 107 have accepted their study place compared to 68 last year.

At Chemistry, there are 16 who have accepted the place this year. Last year, that number was just 13. At Physics, there are 20 new students, one fewer than last year. In addition, a further five on each of the two programs have been offered a place after the second admission round. However, these have not yet had the final opportunity to accept the study places.

The new bachelor's degree programme in Artificial intelligence has gotten off to a great start with over a hundred applicants from all priorities. 30 were offered a place and 27 have accepted. The first students of the programme are thus ready for the start of studies on 1 September. On the other hand, Computer science goes back a bit to 62 new students, which is six fewer than in 2022, but fortunately a smaller decline than admitted to Artificial intelligence.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has made good progress in the number of applicants for Mathematics-economics and Mathematics. This means that on the two programmes we accept respectively 40 and 33 new students compared with respectively 35 and 20 a year ago. Unfortunately, Applied mathematics gets fewer students than last year, when 16 started the programme. This year, just 10 have accepted their study place. However, in Applied mathematics and Mathematics there are a total of five extra students who have been offered a study place in the 2nd admission round but have not yet had the final opportunity to accept the study places.

Biology has a decrease in the number of new students from 67 last year to 54 this year. At Biochemistry and molecular biology, the number of accepted places has fallen from 43 to 36, while at Biomedicine it has fallen from 107 to 82.

Thus, a total of 487 have accepted a study place on our bachelor's programmes this year, which is 29 more than last year. In addition, potentially the 15 applicants who have been offered a place in the 2nd admission round.

– All things considered, we in the management group are satisfied with this year's number of applicants and the number of students to whom we can offer a study place, says Head of the Faculty Administration Niels Kring.

– The management group is discussing what we can do to increase the visibility and enrollment for the biological programmes, which have experienced declining demand in the last few years.
