The faculty has a new strategy

Under the title 'Natural Science for Societal Needs' the faculty aims to create value for and with society

By Marianne Holmer, , 2/27/2026

Dear staff

At the end of January, NAT's new strategy was adopted by the management group, and it is now available on SDUnet via link. We had the opportunity to discuss the strategy with the rector's office when they visited the management group in January.

The rector's office supported the various efforts - and at the same time they made a clear call to maintain and strengthen our efforts with recruitment. There is no doubt that this is an important task for the entire SDU.

The working groups for the strategy's 7 efforts are now well underway in concretizing the efforts, and the first activities have already been launched.

As mentioned earlier, we have, among other things, started on the innovation strategy, where the commitment has been great and super inspiring. I have become convinced that it is a myth that natural sciences cannot innovate.

The heads of departments were asked to identify 2-4 ideas for innovation projects at each department. The result was a number of very strong and visionary presentations. After thorough discussions, we have chosen to move forward with 7-8 ideas, which will now be allowed to develop further.

The vast majority of researchers requested salary funds for young researchers who can continue working on the ideas. External Relations contributes with advice on funding opportunities and with contact for relevant support from RIO. This offer is also valid for those ideas that did not receive a grant this time.

It is important for me to emphasize that innovation is characterized by daring to try new things. Risk is a natural part of innovation.

Later in the year, we will evaluate the process and in August, the management group will again discuss the innovation strategy and decide on activities in 2027. I am very much looking forward to following the projects and learning from the experiences they give us.

There is a very large focus on innovation at this time, and there is an expectation that innovation will become an integrated part of the University Act in the future, in line with research, education and dissemination.

I am therefore extremely pleased that so many people want to contribute to this agenda.
