A word from the Dean

Dear Staff and Students

Danish universities are under political pressure. The message is that, to a greater extent than before, we are to educate graduates required by the labour market. In short, our graduates must find work more quickly. And this is to be done for less money - without a reduction in quality.

Some people may think that this is an unfair demand. Perhaps it is. But before we reach that conclusion, all possibilities for improving our teaching and our study programmes should be explored. This process is already underway following on from the round of cutbacks in the spring. We must also consider whether our organisation and management structure can be fine-tuned. Do we have a suitable management structure in the individual departments?

These questions among others will be touched on at the upcoming Biannual Advisory Seminar, which is to be held on 1 November. The theme for the seminar is the involvement in the relationship between younger researchers (PhD, postdoc, Assistant Professor) and their closest leader (research leader, section leader, centre leader). How do we create a good academic work environment for the younger researchers, and how do we best support their academic development? Section management/research group management will be a theme for discussion at the seminar.

For me, it is crucial that this development at the Faculty is seen in interaction with you - staff as well as students. It will be your competences, your motivation and your ability to take the initiative which will carry this change through.

Fortunately, we are experiencing a positive development. Our education income and completion times for the study year 2015/16 are much better than in previous study years, so the Progress Reform - and other reforms of our study programmes - has had a positive effect on our results.

I look forward to discussing the Faculty's long-term development with you in the near future.

Martin Zachariasen, Dean
