Q&A: What's in the Basement of the SUND Building?

Have you ever wondered how the space in the basement (Level 0) of the SUND building is used? In this week’s Q&A, we’ll give you a glimpse into some of the fascinating features hidden below ground.

Question for the Q&A

I recently visited the basement at SUND to drop off a box. It’s enormous! What is all that space used for?

Dear Colleague,

Thank you for your question.

Level 0, often referred to as the basement, is a fascinating area. Despite the basement-like feel when you take the elevator down from Stenten, you’re arriving at what’s officially called Level 0 or the "parterre." This level is made up of multiple corridors with rooms primarily used for storage—housing materials for entrance exams, OSCE exams, and more.

Level 0 is smaller than what many of us were accustomed to at Winsløwsparken, where the basement extended continuously beneath the buildings. At SUND, Level 0 is divided into distinct sections under the building, requiring you to go up to Level 1 or step outside to move between the different areas.

Beyond storage, Level 0 also offers a variety of other facilities, including classrooms. And did you know that you can also find shower facilities, art, and even zebrafish down there?

Freshen Up

If you’re someone who jogs or cycles to work, you can make use of the shower facilities upon arriving at SUND. These are located on Level 0.

The facilities in building 45.1 and 45.2 are exclusively for staff in the Animal Facility and ISS, respectively. In building 45.3, there are changing rooms and showers available to all staff, accessible 24/7 with an access card.

Here’s a map of SDU with buildings 45.1, 42.2, and 45.3 highlighted for your reference.

The changing rooms offer private shower stalls and lockers for your belongings, equipped with built-in combination locks, so there’s no need to bring your own padlock.

Stay tuned for the next edition of our newsletter in two weeks, where we’ll continue our journey into what lies beneath the building.

Best regards,
SUND Communication
