Inaugural seminars

An inaugural seminar aims to present the scientific issues and relationships that a newly appointed professor stands for. At the same time the seminar will be expected to present a guest lecture of high international standard.
The inaugural seminar is expected to be planned in continuation of an appointment as professor at the faculty.

Form

An inaugural seminar includes two elements:

The first element is the professor's description of her/his visions in connection with the construction of a professional environment that is to take place in connection with her / his appointment as professor. Particular attention must be paid to the above-mentioned cooperation relationships and to the establishment of methods both material and intangible in the form of software.

Planned research projects and their resource circumstances will be expected to be described, including the planned utilization of the potentials already existing at the faculty, at Odense University Hospital and / or in the Region of Southern Denmark.

Thus, not only a picture of the new professor should appear, but to a greater extent a picture of the contribution to the existing research environment, which the appointment of the new professor means to the faculty. The duration of the presentation is estimated to be approximately 20-25 minutes, after which there will be time for clarifying questions.

The second element is a guest lecture by a guest lecturer selected by the new professor. The guest lecturer should be chosen so that the she/he illustrates and documents the relevance and importance of the level of the research field represented by the new professor. This puts the environment, which has been described in Odense in advance, into relief in connection with the international scene.

Guest lecturers should preferably be elected in research environments outside Denmark, be it the Nordic countries, Europe, Australia or the United States.

The guest lecture has a duration of approximately 40 minutes, followed by clarifying questions.

Overall, these two professional features should last a maximum of 90 minutes.

Framework

Inaugural seminars are held as far as possible in an available SDU auditorium at J.B. Winsløws Vej, DK-5000 Odense C, in Campus Odense, Campusvej 55, DK-5230 Odense M, or at a hospital in the Region of Southern Denmark, depending on which research unit the professor has joined.

The aim is to hold the seminars on a fixed weekday - preferably Thursday or Friday from noon (14.00 hrs.). After the seminar, a reception is held, which is arranged in advance by the relevant department secretariat.

The inaugural seminars are planned well in advance of each semester. They are announced on SDU’s web site and others. The professor sends the invitation to relevant professionals in her/his field of research - particular emphasis must be on the invitation of colleagues, peers and others from other professional environments than from the faculty in Odense. The Dean’s Office sends invitation to all faculty employees.

Financing

The faculty pays the costs that may be involved with the invitation of the guest lecturer and the following reception (according to the Danish State rules and SDU’s rules and regulations).
