The New Health Building

Everything we share in the new SUND

The move-in at New SUND is underway, and the many new facilities are gradually being put into use. In this regard, it is worth remembering that in the new SUND, there is no "yours and mine." Here, we share facilities across units, groups, and departments.

By Bente Kjær, 8/15/2023

The areas in New SUND are divided among different institutes, groups, and departments, so all units have their own space and some facilities in the building that they can use.

However, this does not mean that the area and facilities are reserved for a specific unit. In New SUND, many facilities are shared, which means they can be used by everyone across the faculty – and to some extent, the university.

So, it's possible that you may have colleagues from other units visiting the area you work in, while you can also freely use many of the facilities available throughout the building.

For example, everyone at SUND is welcome to use the open office areas on an institute corridor, the kitchenettes in the faculty administration, or an available desk in a neighboring unit.

Shared Workspaces and Attendance Days

The fact that we share facilities in New SUND means that:

  • All available desks can be used by everyone across SUND.
  • All open office areas can be used by everyone across SUND.
  • All kitchenettes can be used by everyone across SUND.
  • All printer rooms can be used by everyone across SUND.

Furthermore, this means that:

  • All meeting rooms can be used by everyone across SUND - and the rest of SDU.
  • All meeting areas can be used by everyone across SUND - and the rest of SDU.

If your unit has shared workspaces, and everyone is present on a given day, there are plenty of options to gather and find a place for everyone.

For example, you can combine your own workspaces with nearby flexible workstations and empty desks in neighboring units, or you can book a meeting room or a project room with enough space for everyone.

Below, you will find more information about shared facilities in New SUND.

Some of the things we share in New SUND

The office corridors in New SUND consist of a central aisle with access to enclosed offices on both sides.

The offices, which can accommodate 1, 2, 3, or 4 people, all have windows facing the outdoors while having glass fronts/doors facing the central aisle.

Regardless of whether you have space in an office for one or more individuals, others have access to it when you are not there.

In other words, the office spaces in New SUND are not private.

Read more about office spaces in New SUND here.

In addition to the enclosed offices, an office corridor also includes an open area in the middle.

The design of the open area is up to the unit or units that occupy that particular office corridor. Therefore, the many open areas may look different.

However, what is common for all areas is that they may be used by everyone across SUND, regardless of which unit they belong to.

Below you will find examples of how some units furnish the open office areas.

Examples of Layout for Open Office Areas

The plan is for the faculty administration to reuse some of the "black tables" (long tables) and set them up in the open area on the first floor.

These tables can be used as gathering spots for lunch, special occasions, or other purposes.

Furthermore, the plan is to furnish the open area on the second floor with lounge furniture (from Cellen) on one side of the area and a small meeting table with chairs on the other side. The idea is to divide the area with some plants.

The space can be used for informal meetings, short breaks during work, phone calls, etc.

On the second floor, there are also plans for 2 "flyverpladser" (flexible workstations) at the dean's secretariat. Perhaps there will be 1-2 "flyverpladser" on the first floor near SUND Education as well, but that is not yet decided.

At the Department of Public Health, the plan is to furnish the open areas as various types of "gathering spaces."

As a starting point, the open areas will be furnished with existing furniture, and the final choices and decisions will be made after the move-in.

At the joint secretariat for the Department of Clinical Research and the Department of Regional Health Research, the plan is to utilize the open office areas for both meeting spaces and flexible workstations ("flyverpladser").

The areas will be furnished by reusing existing meeting tables and repurposing a 3-part height-adjustable desk providing three flexible workstations.

On the drawings here, you can, among other things, see where in New SUND you will find the open areas. They are marked with the signature color called "SUND Fælles.

The New SUND building contains 41 meeting rooms, evenly distributed throughout the entire building. All meeting rooms in New SUND are shared meeting rooms that can be booked by anyone across SDU.

In addition to traditional enclosed meeting rooms, New SUND includes several areas for informal meetings and gatherings. These meeting spaces are located in crosswalks and can be used by anyone at the university.

Both the meeting rooms and meeting spaces in New SUND are not reserved for the faculty, a specific unit, department, group, or the like. Instead, they are accessible to everyone at SDU.

In the New SUND building, there are kitchenettes available for staff on the ground floor as well as on the first and second floors. In total, there are 29 kitchenettes.

On all three floors, you will find the kitchenettes located near the office and laboratory areas throughout the entire building. For example, there will be a kitchenette associated with each office corridor and its occupants.

However, just because a kitchenette is associated with a specific office corridor doesn't mean it's exclusive to the occupants of that corridor. Like many other facilities in New SUND, the kitchenettes are also for communal use.

This means that you are more than welcome to visit your neighbor's kitchenette and use their coffee machine.

As before, you can print, scan, and copy from the multifunctional machines, where you can log in with your access card or by entering your email address and password.

The multifunctional machines are evenly distributed throughout the building and are for shared use.

Here you can see where in the house the machines are placed on levels 0, 1, and 2.

ABC about New SUND

Information that can assist you in settling into New SUND.

Dean Ole Skøtt on the use of New SUND:

- We have a lot of shared facilities in New SUND – we have dining areas, kitchenettes, and informal meeting spaces, all of which will contribute to a collaborative culture.

- Additionally, we are very mindful of sharing the office spaces we have, as we are not interested in having empty desks throughout the week.

- This means that my workspace is available to all of you when I am not using it – and the same goes for all other workspaces.
