Workload guidance
Teaching
The Faculty of Business and Social Sciences has decided that each department should draw up a workload catalogue based on the working methods and needs of the department for the benefit of the staff, management and students. With effect from the fall semester 2020, workload hours for teaching are allocated based on the ECTS and class size of a course.
A workload ("norm" in Danish) system based on ECTS, and class size has to honor varying teaching activities and not just contact hours.
It has been agreed that departments use the same workload rates for teaching in HA (BSc in Economics and Business Administration) common courses. A number of HA common courses differ from other courses offered by the Department of Economics by the fact that they stretch over two semesters (see list below):
HA common courses:
- Microeconomics (2 semesters)
- Macroeconomics (2 semesters)
- Mathematics (2 semesters)
The course size is established as the number of students enrolled in classes in a course per October 1 in the fall semester, respectively 1 March in spring semester.
HA common courses | Other courses at the department | |
Working hours per ECTS | 21 | 20 |
Course size, working hours per student | Course completed over one semester: 0.75 Course completed over two semesters: 1.25 |
1 |
Example: a 10 ECTS course which is not a HA common course, with 50 students will have 1x20 + 50x1 = 250 working hours.
The number of working hours covers all teaching and examination activities connected with teaching a course. For example, classes, exercises, take-home assignments and examination.
Supervision
For study activities requiring supervision, e.g., Bachelor projects, Master's theses and Project-based courses (traineeship), working hours are allocated according to the ECTS of the project:
- 1 student: 0.5 working hours per ECTS
- 2 students: 0.75 working hours per ECTS
- 3 or more students: 0.9 working hours per ECTS
The working hours include both supervison and execution of the oral examination/defense.
