Greener procurement at SDU in the future

SDU is the first university in Denmark to join POGI, the Partnership for Green Public Procurement, which will ensure sustainability of our procurement in the future.

Eco-labelled paper, greener cleaning and less food waste in the canteen can be some of the positive effects of the partnership that SDU has joined with a number of other public institutions and municipalities.

- Up until now, no other educational institutions have joined POGI, as the Partnership is known, but it is hoped that more will hop on board, says Chief Procurement Officer Bill Busch Kyed, and points out that there is power in volume when we talk about procurement.

- POGI's procurement targets apply across several municipalities and regions. This generates a significant amount of volume, which serves to stimulate the market. This ensures that, together with other public purchasers, SDU can greatly contribute to sustainable development.

- By acting together, we can place significant demands. As a single provider, there is little we can do alone, but together we can make a difference, he says.

Economically advantageous as well

In addition to ensuring far more sustainable procurement, joining POGI also means that procurement will take place more effectively in the long term. At the same time, environmentally and energy efficient procurement pays off in the long term, and this generates both sustainable and economic benefits for SDU.

- We are also sending a clear signal to staff and students that sustainability is an absolute priority in everything we do at SDU, emphasises Bill Busch Kyed.

Among other things, POGI is influencing the new canteen procurement at SDU, where new and greater demands are being placed on sustainable operation.
