New quotes to be engraved at the SDU pillar
On the occasion of SDU's 60th anniversary, staff and students are invited to suggest quotes to be engraved in the staircase at the column in front of SDU's main entrance.
When SDU marks the university's 60th anniversary in September, it will also be with new words on one of the university's most distinctive landmarks.
The column and the surrounding granite staircase in front of SDU's main entrance is the artwork Interstitial by Jørn Larsen. The steps around the column are decorated with quotes relating to the university's shared philosophy and the world of science.
When the work was erected in 2003, 56 quotes were carved into the granite. In 2007, four new quotes were added, and in connection with SDU's 50th anniversary, three more quotes were selected for the staircase.
Now three new quotes will be selected and engraved as part of the celebration of SDU's 60th anniversary.
All employees and students at SDU can send suggestions for quotes. The suggestions must be submitted via the link at the bottom of the page by Thursday 18 June.
Criteria for quotes
The quotes can be about research, education, innovation, education, critical thinking, academic freedom, social responsibility, collaboration with the outside world, regional anchoring or international orientation.
The most important thing is that the quote has a clear relevance for SDU and can say something significant about the university's mission, values or role in society.
The proposed quotes must be able to stand alone and be understood without their original context. At the same time, they must be able to speak broadly to students and employees across subject areas.
The quotes must be able to be engraved in stone, which is one of the reasons why they must be short and precise. Suggestions should be a maximum of 150 characters including spaces.
The quotes should inspire reflection, curiosity and critical thinking, and they should be robust enough to be meaningful in the future.
How to submit a proposal
When submitting a suggestion, please indicate:
- Quote
- Source with author, work and year
- Why the quote is relevant to SDU?
- Name and affiliation to SDU, for example employee, department, division
- Email address
Quotations can be proposed in Danish and English. SDU reserves the right to clarify copyright issues and to reject quotes if the necessary documentation cannot be provided.
Three quotes will be selected
After the deadline, the proposals will be reviewed and a committee appointed by SDU will select the three quotations to be engraved in the staircase by the column. The committee is chaired by Rector Jens Ringsmose.
The proposers of the selected quotes will receive a gift voucher for Academic Bookshop to the value of 500 DKK. One prize will be awarded per selected proposal.
The new quotes will be presented in connection with SDU's 60th anniversary in September.
