The University of Southern Denmark has joined the National Alliance for the Advancement of Basic Skills

Through knowledge sharing within the alliance, SDU hopes both to learn from others and to inspire workplaces to strengthen basic skills as a pathway to well-being and professional development.

By SDU HR, 4/4/2025

The university's researchers, educators, leaders, and technical-administrative staff are the decisive foundation for SDU to deliver high quality. SDU aims to be recognised for its motivating and stimu-lating university frameworks and environments, where staff can fully realise their potential. Prioritis-ing competency development is essential for attracting, retaining, and nurturing talents capable of performing the university's core tasks at a high standard.

- Focusing on basic linguistic and digital skills is a significant part of ensuring relevant competency development opportunities for all. Basic skills serve as the gateway to further development and also contribute to our well-being at work, notes Karna Kühnell Gautier, Head of Work Environment and Development at SDU HR, responsible for the university's Staff Courses.

SDU offers Danish lessons for international staff and English lessons for everyone, as a natural part of being an international workplace. Opportunities for competency development in IT and digitalisation are continuously developed and expanded, focusing on both basic and highly specialised skills. In 2024, SDU initiated dyslexia training and welcomed participants from various fields, includ-ing technical staff, a lab technician, a PhD student, and a professor.

- In the National Alliance, we aim to share knowledge with other companies and organisations about how we can develop relevant competency development opportunities for basic skills that are appealing and widely utilised, says Karna Kühnell Gautier, adding: We hope to both inspire others and find inspiration ourselves.

The National Alliance for the Advancement of Basic Skills

  • Literacy, numeracy, language skills, and digital competencies are fundamental skills that make a significant difference both at work and in private life.
  • The aim of the Alliance is to support and promote the efforts of companies and public workplaces to enhance employees' skills in Danish, mathematics, English, or IT.
  • The Alliance is designed for workplaces already working ambitiously in this area, as well as those that wish to do more.
  • The government and labour market stakeholders back the Alliance, bringing together public and private employers to create better opportunities for employee competency development.
