SDU

Freedom of expression and respect for diversity

SDU upholds freedom of expression and the right of individuals to use it. In addition to being a fundamental right in a democracy, freedom of expression is also crucial for the functioning of a university. Freedom of expression is inextricably linked to academic freedom and freedom of research.

SDU’s statement about freedom of research, freedom of teaching and freedom of expression and debate is in keeping with the fundamental values of universities, which are rooted in the Enlightenment. It has been on the premise of academic freedom that universities have generated new knowledge for many years, and it is to this freedom that the University, its management, researchers and lecturers are obligated.

We have a clear expectation that everyone’s right to free speech is respected. is important to emphasise that SDU as an organisation cannot be held accountable for the statements of individual employees. Furthermore, in SDU’s personnel policy guidelines, it is stated that ‘SDU wishes a tone that is based on decency and is characterised by a compassionate approach that shows respect for diversity and the integrity of each employee.

A good tone and behaviour is everyone’s responsibility

We would like to emphasise that everyone has a responsibility to contribute to maintaining a proper tone and conduct. This is done by showing respect for others and making an effort to understand other points of view and opinions. But also by challenging views, opinions and ideas that you disagree with.

SDU is home to and hosts many discussions and expressions. It’s part of our nature as a university that is founded on the ideals of the Enlightenment. At all times, the inviolability of freedom of expression – within the framework of the law – outweighs the consideration of anyone who may be offended. This also applies to speech that seems unpleasant, incorrect or offensive.
