When you cannot remember your password or you cannot find the Word file you forgot to save – the IT service at SDU is always ready to help. One of the people who may greet you with a friendly voice over the phone or at the counter is Ukrainian-born Julie Bane.

She moved to Denmark eight years ago to work in horticulture production. She lived in a house outside Odense with many other people, and her first years in the country were spent working with a variety of plants for an hourly wage of DKK 60.

Time and space to settle in

In that crowded house, she also met her future husband, and a lot has happened since then. Today, they live in a house of their own with their two children. Her husband is a carpenter, and Julie Bane is training to become an IT supporter.

- I wanted to be able to navigate the digital world better, and even though it was difficult at first, I’m really happy with my training programme, where I’ve received a lot of help and learned a lot, she says.

She joined the University of Southern Denmark in 2023, when she got a traineeship in SDU IT. From the very beginning, she has been allowed to try her hand at all the tasks of an IT supporter, but with a lot of support and time from her manager and her colleagues.

- I have always felt seen, right from the first meeting in which all applicants were given a chance to show their skills. There are no set tasks, and I slowly but surely got to know my role here. Now I do support tasks on the phone as well as at the counter.

Also offering support in her private life

After the war in Ukraine broke out in 2022, a number of Ukrainians fled to Denmark and elsewhere, and Julie Bane has also deeply engaged in helping the refugees arriving in Denmark.

- I’ve been able to use a lot from my work and my education, so I’ve helped a lot of people get settled in Denmark and sort out all the practicalities, like phone numbers, MitID, and so on.

Good colleagues brighten the day

Julie Bane says that she still has a lot to learn, but she has a lot of talented colleagues to look up to, and she is continuously developing her skills while supporting others from SDU. And SDU IT offers a good working environment which also enables her to look after her family.

- It really is fantastic to be here. And I really hope that I can continue to work here when my traineeship is over. We have the funniest team and I think it’s great to be able to make even a small difference in a big organisation.
