Master's reform at SDU
Final Report from the Master's Degree Committee
The Master's Degree Committee has published its final report, outlining the framework for implementing the 2023 master's degree reform – one of the most comprehensive reforms of university education in recent history.
The report, the result of months of work by university rectors, government officials, and representatives from the Danish National Union of Students, will serve as the foundation for how the reform is implemented.
The report includes considerations on how the ambition to restructure 30 percent of future master's programs can be achieved. It also highlights that the rectors find the political goal of enrolling 20 percent of students in part-time, work-based master's programs to be "particularly challenging" to meet under the current financial conditions.
Proposals for Adjustments
To achieve the reform’s ambitions of increasing the number of work-based master's programs, universities propose several specific adjustments in a dedicated appendix to make the model more flexible and appealing.
These adjustments include:
- The option to begin the first year of a work-based master's program under standard conditions with access to student grants (SU).
- Reducing the work-hour requirement from 25 to 20 hours per week.
- A model where work-based master's programs are supplemented with regular master's programs that include mandatory business internships.
- Special solutions for engineering students, ensuring that a lack of work-based master's opportunities does not lead to an actual reduction in civil engineering programs.
If the goal of enrolling 20 percent of future master's students in work-based programs is not achieved, the reform will result in a significantly higher number of one-year master's programs than originally planned.
