Transport to, from and at SDU

On 1 January 2023, SDU’s new travel rules came into force. These are aimed at limiting emissions related to work-related travel.

If applicable, consider the following:

• Is the journey necessary or can it be replaced by a virtual meeting?
• If you are travelling anyway, consider pooling several activities together to avoid several journeys.
• As a rule of thumb, choose the most climate-friendly mode of transport.
• To the fullest extent possible, use public transport, such as bus or rail.
• For longer work-related trips involving aircraft, try to avoid many stopovers, as greenhouse gas emissions are particularly high during take-off and landing. Consider whether part of the journey can be made by train.
• Prioritise carpooling with other people if you choose to travel by car.
• As a rule, avoid domestic air travel in Denmark.
• As a rule, avoid flights for distances less than 500 km.

It goes without saying that cycling is a climate-friendly mode of transport. So if you can cycle – or walk – to university, these are two of the greenest modes of transport you can choose.

A green alternative to the car is public transport. Therefore, you can also help reduce the University’s greenhouse gas emissions by travelling by bus, train or light rail to and from the University.

If you are travelling to the Odense campus by electric or hybrid car, or if you are travelling in a group, we have reserved special spaces for you.

At SDU, we want to strengthen our digital meeting skills and the digital meeting culture by offering support with well-functioning technological solutions and aids.

While an online meeting does use electricity, the climate account has shown that we are not travelling nearly as much for meetings, courses and conferences as we did before the COVID-19 lockdown. 

If we continue this new trend in the future, the CO2 budget could be reduced quite significantly – and we can use our time more efficiently than by constantly being on the move.
