Windows 10 is being phased out - upgrade to Windows 11 required by 1 October 2025

To ensure a stable and secure IT environment, SDU IT has set an internal deadline for upgrading to Windows 11:
All Windows 10 section/units must be upgraded by 1 October 2025.

After this date, section/units with Windows 10 will no longer be able to access SDU's network (neither wired nor wireless) and will therefore not be able to be used in the daily work at the university.

What do you need to do?

SDU IT has been pushing for machines to update themselves to Windows 11. If yours hasn't been updated yet, there are two things at play:
- There is a bug on your Windows 10 computer that prevents it from automatically updating. Your computer needs to be reinstalled with Windows 11
- Your computer may be so old that it cannot run Windows 11 and needs to be replaced with a new computer

You are always welcome to contact the Service Desk for guidance. You will also receive information directly about your Windows 10 machines that need to be handled.

We recommend that you don't wait until the last minute, so get in touch now to make the transition as smooth as possible.

What happens if you don't upgrade?

If you haven't updated your computer to Windows 11 by 1 October 2025, your computer will be isolated.

Without updates, your machine will be vulnerable to security threats such as viruses and hacking and will no longer be safe for online services, work and other important tasks.

In practice, this means that your computer may become insecure and thus unusable for normal SDU use. There may be different scenarios in e.g. laboratories where a Windows 10 machine will still be able to run, but it will be under individually agreed frameworks in dialogue with SDU IT.
