About rules

New rules for cancellation of course registration allow students to better organise their course of study

From 1 September, students can register and cancel registration for course elements during what used to be the exchange period.

Background

Since 2014, registration for courses and exams has been binding for students. It was the Study Progress Reform at the time – and the inherent requirement to reduce the average durations of study – that was the main driver behind the University’s decision that students could no longer freely cancel registration for courses and exams.

The new rules

From 1 September this year, the rules will be relaxed, and students will now have the opportunity to change the choices they made several months before in relation to the upcoming semester’s courses. The new rules allow students to cancel registration for course elements within the first 21 days of the semester. Previously, you could only substitute one elective for another elective. Students also have the opportunity to enrol in new course elements if places are available.

Certain exceptions

There may be course elements for which students cannot cancel registration. This is because each programme is allowed to decide that it is not possible to cancel registration for specific course elements. One reason for this could be that the course element is costly. If it is not possible to cancel registration for a course element, this information must appear in the course description. In addition, students cannot cancel registration for course elements if they have been automatically registered for these by the University, if the exam has already started or if it concerns the thesis.

There may also be personal circumstances that prevent a student from cancelling registration for a course element. For example, if a student has used examination attempts in an exam, they can cancel registration for the course, but they will still have to complete the course element. If students are unsure whether their registration to a course element is binding, they can contact the registration office at SDU Education for further information.

News rules in place for the winter exams

When students sit their exams this winter, they will also find that the rules have been relaxed. As a new feature, students can regret having registered for a re-examination. The option is valid until 14 days before the re-examination takes place.

Focus on student well-being

The University hopes that the new option to cancel registration for course elements and re-examinations may alleviate some of the pressure that students experience by giving them the opportunity to change their choices.
