More young people participated in SDU’s University Taster Courses

How it went at SDU with an example from SDU Esbjerg

On Wednesday and Thursday of the week starting on 24 October, all of SDU's BSc and diploma engineering programmes were visited by young people doing a taster course. A total of 1,398 interns from all over the country visited SDU campuses. That’s 180 more than last year.

University Taster Courses are a Maggi cube

During two intense days, the taster courses reflect many different aspects of student life. For the participants, their future choice of study is about the content of their course of study, their place of study and the city where they will be spending their student life.

All education programmes allowed the participants to take part in an academic programme that provided insight into the content and teaching of that particular education programme. They also participated in activities designed to give them a taste of what it is like to be a student at the University of Southern Denmark. There were tours of the different cities, communal meals, presentations on how to find student accommodation, quizzes, socialising with current students and much more.

Here's how the taster courses went at one of our campuses: SDU Esbjerg

SDU Esbjerg welcomed approximately 60 course participants. The participants were divided between the Business Administration, Law and Sociology and Cultural Analysis programmes. All participants – regardless of education programme – took part in activities tailored to the specific programme. They attended lectures, participated in practical assignment lessons and received separate presentations. In addition, there were joint activities such as lunch and a guided tour of the building by current students and academic advisers.

On Wednesday afternoon/evening there was an AfterStudy (in Danish) event (organised by Education Esbjerg in cooperation with all higher education institutions in Esbjerg) for all taster course participants from higher education institutions in Esbjerg. This went down at Esbjerg Streetfood, where Education Esbjerg discussed what Esbjerg has to offer when you’re not studying. All of this was spiced up with a quiz reportedly featuring ‘cool prizes’. From 7pm, a bingo event was held, with around 150 current students in attendance and an opportunity to win even more great prizes.

It was the first time that SDU Esbjerg welcomed taster course participants at the Department of Law, and without the programme having started up at that. SDU Esbjerg will be admitting students to the Law degree programme with start of studies on 1 September 2023. Thirty seats on the taster course were offered and all of them filled up quickly.

Behind the University Taster Course

The University Taster Course is held every year in week 43 and is open to all students in Denmark in their final year of a secondary education programmes, as well as young people on sabbatical. They have applied to visit an education programme they would like to see up close and try out for two days.
