A good starting point when involving external organizations in your teaching is to consider what type of practical activity is suitable for collaboration

The practical activity should be relevant to both the students, the course's learning objectives, and the company or organization.

  • A good place to start is to identify your good reasons for involving an external organization in your course, as this can help you get direction on what you want to achieve. Ask yourself these questions:

    • Do you want to give your students the opportunity to apply specific theories or train specific skills?
    • Do you want to involve alumni and representatives from a specific industry or sector to inspire the students with the latest knowledge from the job market?
    • Or do you want to give your students a different learning experience?

  • Research shows, similar to our experiences, that involving external organizations through a practical activity must be linked to the academic goals to make sense for all parties. Review the course description and identify the three most central things that students need to learn where a practical element could help. Consider the following:

    • Are there important skills you want to focus on? 
    • Have previous students had challenges with specific topics where an external organization could contribute?

    Look at the latest course plan, if you have access to it – is there a good time and a relevant topic where it would be appropriate to connect a practical activity?

    Type of practical activity What is it? When is it good to use this activity? Resources
    Presentation from an external organization Introduction to how an organization works with something relevant to the course. When students can benefit from external perspectives on working life, gain insight into industry practices, and potential career paths. Requires few resources. Needs clear expectation alignment and follow-up.
    Guest teaching Practice-oriented teaching in one or more topics of the course. When you want to give students the opportunity to learn from someone who works with the theory or topic in practice. Requires clear expectation alignment and coordination.
    Cases in teaching A concrete task or problem from an organization. When you want to translate theory into practice, create deeper insight into an organization and its work processes, and give students the opportunity to work with real problems. Flexible in form and time. Often involves group work. Requires time and resources.
    Visits to one or more organizations Visits with students to relevant organizations. When you want to give students a physical sense of a workplace, understand the organizational culture, and see theory applied in practice. Logistically demanding and in terms of transport. Requires preparation and research from students.
