DIAS Event: How to fight dictatorship and war if you are an exiled journalist: the case of Novaya Gazeta Europe - By Kirill Martynov

Novaya Gazeta was the oldest and the only independent democratic newspaper of Russia. In 2021 the editor in chief Dmitry Muratov was awarded Nobel Peace Prize for his work. Few months later the full scale war against Ukraine started and journalists in Russia faced war-time censorship. As for now at least 45 of journalists in Russia are in prison because of his work. Hundreds of others were forced to leave the country and work in exile. Kirill Martynov, the editor in chief of Novaya Gazeta Europe, the media created by exiled journalists of Novaya Gazeta, answers how to be a journalist if you lost your country and was labeled a criminal by the Kremlin".

About Kirill Martynov
Kirill Martynov has a Ph.D. in Philosophy. He was an assistant professor in the Higher School of Economics (Moscow) in 2007-2020. Together with his colleagues he created Svobodny University (Free University Moscow). He was an editor for politics in Novaya Gazeta in 2014-2022 and became a co-founder of Novaya Gazeta Europe after the beginning of full scale war in Ukraine.
