Check the agreement before submitting your manuscript
As an SDU researcher, you can publish Open Access in a wide range of journals without paying the full publication fee yourself. SDU is covered by a number of agreements with academic publishers that provide free or discounted Open Access publishing.
In the library’s APC Checker, you can search for the journal you are considering and see whether it is covered by one of SDU’s publishing agreements.
The APC Checker provides information on whether an agreement covers all or part of the publication fee and which conditions apply. It is worth checking your options when choosing a journal rather than waiting until your manuscript has been accepted. “As a researcher, you should always check the specific agreement yourself. Agreements may vary in terms of article types, Creative Commons licences and possible article quotas. Although we update the APC list regularly, the publisher’s own information ultimately takes precedence”, Anne Thorst Melbye, Head of the Department of Research Documentation at the University Library.
If the journal is not covered
A publishing agreement is not the only route to Open Access. If the journal in which you want to publish is not covered by an agreement, Green Open Access may be an option. You upload the accepted version of your manuscript to Pure, and depending on the publisher’s terms, it can then be made publicly available either immediately or after an embargo period.
A journal without a relevant publishing agreement therefore does not necessarily mean that your article cannot be made available Open Access.
The library’s Open Access guide brings together information on publishing agreements, Green Open Access, Creative Commons licences and other issues to consider when publishing.
Contact the library’s Open Access team at open-access@bib.sdu.dk if you are unsure about an agreement or your options for publishing Open Access.
