7 principles of good research communication

• 1. You must be correct

  When communicating research, the content must be accurate and give the target audience a true understanding of the relevant facts of both the results and the research behind it.
  
• 2. You must be relevant

  Research communication must include all factors that are likely to be relevant to the recipient's understanding of the results of the research.

  
  
• 3. You need to talk about the uncertainties

  Scientific results are always subject to varying degrees of uncertainty. You need to include this in your narrative.

  
  
• 4. You need to talk about the scientific status of the research

  Are the results widely supported by the scientific community or do they deviate from the general consensus in the field? Are they preliminary results? Are they published in scientific channels and what is the status of these channels?

  
  
• 5. You must tell us who is the originator of the research

  Who is the originator of the knowledge being communicated? Yourself, the local researcher or other researchers? It must be absolutely clear.

  
  
• 6. You need to make the perspective very clear

  It must be made clear whether the researcher is speaking as an absolute expert in the field or based on general knowledge or an opinion in a broad field, but not necessarily in their own research area.

  
  
• 7. You need to consider conflicts of interest

  There may be conflicts of interest such as funding of the research, patent applications, royalties, company collaborations, disqualification, etc.
