The world of today is dominated by nation-states. The task of understanding the rise of nationalism has therefore been key to students of history and the social sciences alike. Yet, the theme of pan-nationalism and similar modes of macro-nationalism has been largely overlooked by most studies of modern nationalism. This public seminar attempts to close the gap by discussing what pan-nationalism is and to what extent new histories of pan-nationalism change our view of the rise of nationalism in the nineteenth century.
