Procurement at SUND

Procurement at SUND: One shared function – one professional team

SUND now has a single, consolidated procurement team with the aim of strengthening and harmonising procurement processes across the faculty. The handover process is progressing steadily – and the team, all of whom have strong laboratory expertise, are ready to help the units get off to a smooth start.

By SUND Kommunikation, 11/13/2025

In September, the new shared procurement function was launched at SUND. The handover process is now underway, and Procurement is gradually reaching out to the individual units. The aim is to ensure better procurement processes across the faculty. Change can raise questions – so we’d like to introduce the team behind the effort, so you know who’s handling the task.

Everyone in the SUND procurement team has hands-on experience from laboratories and solid knowledge of the products and instruments being purchased. The team speaks the same language as researchers and technicians at SUND, and understands both the needs and the types of analyses being carried out.

The team behind SUND Procurement

Mette Fredenslund, team coordinator
Qualified as a Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology, specialising in cell biology and proteins. Has 12 years of experience as a research laboratory technician at SDU, formerly at IMB under Ole Skøtt. Has also worked for 18 years in sales of laboratory equipment and products.

Ann Sofie Elkjær Madsen, procurement officer
Former laboratory technician at IMM with Boye Lagerbon Jensen. For several years, she was responsible for procurement at CVR (Cardiovascular and Renal Research Unit) and has been actively involved in improving procurement processes at SUND.

Liva Nielsen, procurement officer
Trained biomedical laboratory scientist. Previously department manager at Cryos International, with responsibilities including procurement. Most recently employed in the laboratory at Kerry Ingredients & Flavours.

How the handover works

The handover to the shared procurement function is taking place gradually: The procurement team will reach out directly to the units when it's time for the transition. The Faculty Secretariat has already completed the handover. In addition, KI and IMM are currently in the process. The remaining units will follow during spring 2026, as previously announced.

You can read more about the procurement function and its rollout here.

The team is based in room V11-608a-1 – and everyone is welcome to stop by and say hello.

Background and decision-making process

Background:
Procurement tasks at SUND have so far been handled by around 75 staff members – without being a core responsibility for any of them. This has led to inconsistent practices, uneven application of the rules, and a lack of economies of scale.

Starting point:
In June 2024, a proposal outlining the need for a new procurement structure was presented to the heads of department. Approval was given to continue developing the idea.

Improvement process:
Between June 2024 and March 2025, an improvement process was carried out as part of SDU’s improvement framework. The process focused on user involvement and professional anchoring.

Decision:
At the heads of department meeting on 25 March 2025, it was decided to establish SUND Procurement as a joint function under SUND Finance. The function will be established during autumn 2025.
