Meet fellow PhD students and colleagues

Here are some places where you can build your social and professional networks during your PhD. If you’re looking for an activity not listed below, feel free to initiate a different form of community.

In other words: Get out and about!

Colloquia

The department’s sections and research centres regularly hold a series of colloquia and seminars with their own researchers or invited guest speakers – read more here.

Additionally, you can meet other PhD students (and colleagues from the department) here:

Cake club SAK

IMADA has a cake club (Semi-Academic Cake Club) dating back to 2003. If you’re a fan of cake, have a sweet tooth, or just enjoy good company, consider joining. The club meets every Tuesday around 1:45 PM for about half an hour.

Contact Christine Johanne Sæderup Gundlach to learn more about Cake club SAK.

IMADA PhD Exchange

PhD Exchange was established to give PhD students at the department the opportunity to meet across sections and research centres. About four times a year, the group meets for approximately one and a half hours of academic knowledge sharing and focuses on the upcoming meeting of the Faculty of Science PhD Committee. Based on the meeting’s agenda, viewpoints and opinions on various points are discussed. There is also the opportunity to suggest topics that the committee should be made aware of.

After each meeting, the department hosts lunch.

The purpose of the IMADA PhD Exchange meetings is primarily to give your representative in the Faculty of Science PhD Committee insight into your opinions on the points on the upcoming committee meeting agenda. It is also a good opportunity for you to meet your fellow PhD students at the department in an informal setting and expand your network. You will automatically receive a meeting invitation when the next meeting approaches.

You are always welcome to contact the coordinator of IMADA PhD Exchange: Maiken Westen Holm Svendsen.

PhD café

The PhD cafés are organised by the SDU Library, typically twice per semester. The cafés offer presentations and the opportunity to discuss with other PhD students topics relevant to you during your PhD programme. This could include presentations on time management, grant applications, and work-life balance.

IMADA Student Council

The Student Council (aka IMADA Fagråd) is a student association for all students in programmes affiliated with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science – including PhD students. The council focuses on maintaining social activities at the department but is also an active student political association.

PAUSD

PAUSD (an abbreviation for PhD Association at the University of Southern Denmark) is an association with the aim to:

  • Represent you and SDU at the national level (PAND).
  • Give you and other PhD students a collective voice.
  • Create a safe and welcoming forum to discuss all issues affecting PhD students and postdocs.
  • Provide opportunities to meet other PhD students from across the university.
  • Organise both academic events and social gatherings for PhD students and postdocs.

All PhD students are automatically members of the association, and membership is free.

The association’s events range from panel debates on academic work culture to social events like bar nights and lunches.

Read more about the PAUSD association.

Philos

Philos is a network for PhD students at the Faculty of Science, providing opportunities to meet, debate, and interact across departments within the faculty.

Join the group on Facebook.

SDU Moves

Meet other international and Danish SDU employees and boost your energy and well-being during your workday by participating in yoga, badminton, running groups, tai chi, swimming, and more.

SDU International Club (IC)

IC is for all SDU employees – both Danish and international. The club brings together the university’s many cultures through monthly social and cultural activities. Accompanying partners are very welcome.
