Presentation: Freedom om expression in academia

Daniel Diermeier to visit SDU and give a presentation on freedom of expression

On 14 June, Daniel Diermeier, Professor and Chancellor of Vanderbilt University, USA, will be visiting SDU in Odense. Here he will make a presentation on freedom of expression in the academic world at a DIAS event, where SDU’s new set of values will also be presented.

On Tuesday 14 June at 10.00-11.30 a.m., SDU receives a high-profile visit by Provost and Professor Daniel Diermeier from the USA. Visiting Denmark, he has agreed to make a stop at SDU to give a presentation on freedom of expression in the D:IAS auditorium.

Diermeier has a broad research interest in, among other things, political theory, political institutions, the interplay between business and politics and political behavioural models. He also served as the Chancellor of the University of Chicago (2016-2020), which is the author university of the Report of the Committee on Freedom of Expression – also known as the Chicago principles.

On the same day, the University of Southern Denmark will publish its Declaration on freedom of research, freedom of teaching and freedom of debate and expression, prepared by a task force with the participation of, among others, the chairpersons of the academic councils. The group was set up in January 2022, when Rector Jens Ringsmose announced that SDU needs a clear set of values and a clear description of what academic freedom means at SDU. Therefore, Professor Sten Rynning, who has chaired the task force, will begin the programme with a short presentation on SDU’s new declaration.

The initiative was launched after several examples of academic freedom being the subject of debate in recent years. The declaration will serve as a framework/compass that SDU, among other things, can use as a guiding principle in cases of freedom of research, freedom of teaching as well as freedom of debate and speech.
