Contaminated water at SDU Esbjerg: Boil the water first - until friday!

Contamination in the supply lines to SDU Esbjerg means that water must be boiled before consumption until the alert is cancelled – expected during Tuesday 13 January.

Update Tuesday morning:

Following DIN Forsyning's announcement on Friday about possible drinking water contamination in the area around Jerne Nord in Esbjerg - which supplies SDU in Esbjerg, among others - the recommendation to boil the water has now been extended. The recommendation is due to the fact that bacteria were once again found on Monday in the same well that initially triggered the order from the authorities.

The Danish Patient Safety Authority and Esbjerg Municipality therefore recommend that residents in the area continue to boil the water before drinking it or using it for cooking. The extension means that new samples will have to be tested again and that the boiling recommendation can be lifted on Friday 16 January at the earliest.

DIN Forsyning, which supplies Esbjerg with clean drinking water, has informed us that there may be contamination in the drinking water in the supply lines that deliver water to SDU.

This means that all water must be boiled before it may be consumed. Water from coffee machines does not reach a high enough temperature to kill all bacteria. The same applies to all dishwashers at SDU. According to the guidance from the utility company, water must be boiled for a minimum of two minutes.

It states: “Over the weekend, we have taken a large number of samples. So far, all samples have been clean, but the authorities can only lift the boil recommendation after two consecutive clean samples.

Therefore, we are awaiting the results of the second round of tests, which we will receive on Tuesday."

The notice remains in effect until it is lifted via the same channels through which it was announced. That is, by email, on SDUnet, and on ItsLearning.

All questions should be directed to 8888@sdu.dk.
