TIP FOR RESEARCHERS

ORCID turns 10 years in Denmark

The researcher ID ORCID is here to stay. All the publishers use it, it is recognisable and provides uniformity, and you take it with you if you change jobs, even across national borders. In 2020, the ORCID system topped 10 million registered IDs.

"Approximately 77% of the researchers at SDU have an ORCID, and I guess it is about the same for the rest of the country. If you as a researcher do not have an ORCID, I would encourage you to get one," says Anne Thorst Melbye, Head Consultant in the library's Department of Research Documentation, who answers three questions about ORCID below:

  1. Benefits of ORCID?
"Many journals allow you as an author to add your ORCID to the electronic article, so that the ORCID profile can be easily accessed. This increases the guarantee that your research is cited correctly and that citations are attributed to you. I recommend that you create your ORCID in Pure, and if you already have an ORCID, that you connect your ORCID to Pure. The advantage is that the system will then update your publications in ORCID automatically".

  2. Disadvantages of ORCID?
"There aren't any immediate disadvantages that I can think of. The only thing is that we cannot create the ORCID for you – you have to do it yourself, but it is done quite simply via Pure, which has an integrated ORCID identifier."

  3. Do I need to do anything if I have an ORCID? (… or can't remember if I have one?)
"You can check in PURE if you have an ORCID. If you have an ORCID, make sure that you only have one. And make sure that Pure and ORCID are synchronized. When it is up and running, it is self-propelled, and you do not need to check it, just as you do not need to check that you still have your social security number".
