About multi-child births

Parents who have triplets or more children at the same birth are entitled to 26 extra weeks of leave of absence with maternity pay. The parents are free to divide the extra leave among themselves. The leave should be taken within 18 months after the birth.

26 Weeks of Extra Leave with Parental Leave Benefits

As parents of two or more children, born at the same birth (multiple birth parents), you are entitled to 26 weeks of extra leave with parental leave benefits, distributed with 13 weeks to each parent.

You cannot transfer the extra leave to the other parent.

But there is an option to transfer the leave to a social parent (for example, a spouse or partner who is not the child's biological parent), provided that the requirements set out in the Maternity Leave Act are met.

The extra 26 weeks must be taken before the children turn 1 year old. The weeks cannot be extended or postponed. This applies regardless of any obstacles to parental leave, including if one of the children, for instance, is hospitalized.
The rules apply to children born on or after May 1, 2024.

Salary Rights for Multiple Birth Parents

As an employee at SDU, you are covered by the state parental leave agreement.

If you have two or more live births in the same delivery, you are entitled to a further 13 weeks’ paid leave.

The entitlement to the 13 additional weeks’ paid leave applies to both the mother and the father/co-mother.

The 13 additional weeks’ paid leave are in addition to the standard paid leave entitlements under the maternity agreement.

In addition, the standard rules on pay during maternity and parental leave apply, including the right to 10 weeks’ pay for each parent and 8 weeks’ pay which the parents are free to divide between them.

Other maternity leave rules

In addition to the above, the standard rules apply to mothers and fathers/co-mothers respectively.
