SDU Research Academy
A professional development programme for assistant and associate professors who wish to strengthen their skills as future research leaders
The programme supports participants in developing key competencies in project management, strategic funding applications, leading research teams, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration – all grounded in their own research practice and real-world tasks.
Implementation and peer groups
In research academy you will be working in implementation groups with 3-4 other researchers sharing similar focus and ambitions as you. Implementation meetings differentiates from more classical sparring and feedback groups, by focusing on working with tangible tasks the participants bring to the table (i.e., a draft of a research groups strategy, a funding application draft). A consultant facilitates and organize the meeting in order to make sure you get the right support and inspiration in regard to the aims and tasks you work on.
You will be required to attend 8-10 facilitated implementation meetings over 12-36 months, focusing on one or more themes you are currently working on. For each 1.5-hour meeting, approximately 1.5 hours of preparation is expected. Preparation typically involves watching one or more learning videos, working on improving content from others, and further developing the inputs received from the group and the consultant.
SDU Research Academy is aimed at assisting mid-career researchers (i.e., assistant- and associate professors) in their transition into becoming a research leader.
After completing the course, you have acquired the knowledge and skills to:
- Manage grant application processes, lead your own research projects, manage larger programs, and lead and manage a research team or group
- Participate in interdisciplinary networks both internally and externally
- Promote well-being and talent development in a high-performance work environment
- Collaborate effectively with external partners both domestically and internationally
This course introduces key aspects of managing research in today’s academic environment. Through a series of short videos, it covers project management, research management, funding application processes, and the leadership of research groups and environments.
Researchers are increasingly required to plan strategically, secure external funding, and collaborate across disciplines. The course provides an introduction to concepts and practices that support researchers in organising, managing, and leading research activities effectively.

SDU Research Academy is SDU’s strategic talent initiative for assistant professors and newly appointed associate professors who wish to shape the future of research and research leadership. Through a unique interdisciplinary network across faculties, you will develop your research profile, strengthen your impact as a researcher and leader, and learn to navigate the national and international funding landscape.
Through sparring with peers, experienced research leaders, and your head of department, you will work purposefully towards building a sustainable research career and realising your research ambitions.
