Teaching in English at SDU

The English certification takes place according to the CEFR scale and is based on observation of teaching. The lecturer’s oral skills are assessed in six disciplines: Fluency, Variation and flow, Pronunciation, Vocabulary, Grammar and Interaction. The rate per observation is DKK 5.500. The English certification takes place by agreement with the head of department.

Stages of certification

  • An agreement is made with the assessment team and the participant about where and when the certification will take place.

  • A 45-minute teaching lesson consisting of approx. 50% presentation (monologue) and 50% interaction with students (dialogue), attended by two assessors and video recorded.

  • The videos are used only for what is necessary to complete the certification programme. All videos are stored on the S drive in a closed folder which only the advisory group of the certification programme can access.

  • The level of certification is set to be C1, based on the CEFR scale. In this connection, please note that the language descriptions should be considered optimal goals. This means that not all goals need to be met in order to be placed at a given level. Please refer to the language descriptions matrix below.
  • The result of the assessment is sent to the lecturer and their head of department

  • Along with the video, the lecturer receives detailed written feedback from the assessment team. The report contains both positive and negative examples of the lecturer’s linguistic performance, as well as advice and guidance for possible skill improvements. This report is treated confidentially and is therefore sent to the assessed lecturer only.

  • The lecturer is welcome at any time to contact the assessment team for an oral feedback interview, as well as further advice and guidance for a skill enhancement course, if necessary.
